Three master\u0027s students from China were interviewed, and the transcribed data was analyzed using the Modified-Grounded Theory Approach. The result showed that they did not possess a clear motive about research before coming to Japan; they decided to pursue a master\u0027s degree in Japan because it would be too competitive in China, but necessary for having a good career. Although they are satisfied with their graduate life through which they can gain knowledge, they struggle with a lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge and an ambiguous motive for research make them feel difficulty in autonomously conducting research. Despite those difficulties, they feel certain that what they learn through research will be beneficial for their career.
