 note = {Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu (1658-1714) was a soba-yonin1 (similar to Lord chamberlain) to Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (1646-1709), the fifth Tokugawa Shogun (tenure of office from 1680 to 1709).
ﾒRakushido-Nenroku2ﾓ referred to herein is an official diary in the days of Yoshiyasu. Currently, two wabuntai (Japanese or colloquial style) versions and a kanbuntai (classical Chinese or literal style) version are in the possession of the Yanagisawa Bunko library3 in Yamato-koriyama City, Nara Prefecture.
\nMeanwhile, ﾒMatsukage Nikkiﾓ (Diary in the shade of the pine) is a record of Yoshiyasuﾕs glory made by his sokushitu (concubine) Ogimachi Machiko (1678-1724), which is complete in thirty volumes. The text composed is an elegant, classical style shows everywhere the reception of classical books of all ages and countries.
\nIncidentally, a preface is written to Rakushido-Nenroku, which is of a different nature in the said thoroughly documentary book and is quite literary in content. Moreover, it almost conforms in content with ﾒMusashino,ﾓ Volume 1 of Matsukage Nikki. Why are literary passages incorporated in the official diary? This article gives a commentary on Rakushido-Nenroku and Matsukage Nikki and treats of the significance of the preface.
\nThe paper is composed of all three parts, whose outlines are as follows:
Part one has the reprints of Rakushido-Nenroku and Matsukage Nikki published as ﾒQuotations from the Preface.ﾓ Part two gives a commentary on and treats of the preface to Rakushido-nenroku as the ﾒComment on the Preface to Rakushido-Nenrokuﾓ Further, Part three in particular treats of any common contents as the ﾒComparison of Rakushido-Nenroku and Matsukage Nikki.ﾓ
