 note = {This is a literary essay about Gion Kajiko. There is a letter written by Kajiko to Machiko, called “Kajijyo Syojyou” in Yanagisawa library.
No one knows Kajiko namely Kajijyo’s personal history, nothing but she is a woman lived in the middle of the Edo period and makes her living by managing the teahouse at the Gion area in Kyoto, by the way Gion is the famous red-light district.
She makes wakas on the side. Her wakas are fussed over, so the teahouse has a lot of customers. Kajiko edited anthology of a collection of her wakas called “Kaji-no-ha” or kaji tree’s leaf.
By the way, Ohgimachi Machiko is the noble woman, her father is a court noble Ohgimachi Kinnmichi, her mother is Emon-no-suke, that is the top director of the ladies’ chambers in the Edo castle.
Why Kajiko wrote letter to Machiko? Because these two ladies, Machiko and Kajiko, ware half-sisters. There was every reason to do so.
