Training programs for nursing home employees that are conducted under the sponsorship of individual institutions and workplaces, local governments, or professional organizations can contribute to preventing such abuse. The author has previously worked on training programs for the prevention of abuse of the elderly and people with disabilities by nursing home employees. Reflecting on this experience, the author realized that the point of abuse prevention training programs is not to get rid of abuse, but to aim for “the realization of a decent and authentic life” for the service user. In order to achieve this, such training programs must provide an opportunity for the employees to proactively reflect on their daily social welfare practice, to understand the concept of “user-centered support” through group work, and to learn together while laying the groundwork for practical implementation. Furthermore, it became clear that the significance of training programs was in empowering the support resources of employees, and prompting a change from within.
