The course, Academic Japanese, is based on the concept of language education for sustainable living so that the students can gain wide perspectives and critical thinking skills about the world as well as conventional knowledge for writing, which will be beneficial when completing their MA thesis and foster awareness for developing their career. In order to examine the students’ perceptions about their own learning through the course, the survey was conducted at the end of the spring semester in 2010 and 2011 and the data was obtained from 17 international students. The results show that the students felt that they benefitted from gaining insight into conventional knowledge, organizational patterns, research methods, and the way of presenting ideas after taking the course. However, they showed less interest in how they developed their ideas and collected and organized previous literature.
