| 内容記述 | Oscar Wilde’s famous fairy tales, ‘Happy Prince’ and ‘The Selfish Giant’, which are contained in The Happy Prince and Other Tales, have until recently received less critical consideration than his other works as The Picture of Dorian Gray, Salomé, The Importance of Being Earnest. But, after the publications of Jack Zipes’ Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion and some other full-length studies on these tales, Wilde’s fairy tales have been interpreted in many ways, focusing on the relationship between these tales and his other major works or Irish traditional folktales, Catholicism, etc. My main concern in this thesis is to point out that ‘Happy Prince’ and ‘The Selfish Giant’ have some common symbolic elements which are connected with the height of the figures and the transformation of their bodies. The symbolic elements also express the sacredness through the change of the character’s vessel of soul: body. |
