Obuse, a local independent town with population of 12,000 and Matsushiro, a Nagano City inner-district with population of 20,000 are both located on the right bank of the Chikuma River, on the eastern edge of Zenkohjidaira Basin. Their geographical and demographic conditions are similar, but their developmental styles are contrastive. This paper depicts their environmental conditions, cultural backgrounds, processes of local development, marketing strategies of local produce and products, citizen's spirits for town development, and the networks they have created. |
